The Authenticity Trap: How to Build a Brand That's Genuinely You

“Just be yourself.” It’s the single most common piece of personal branding advice — and the least useful. Because the people who most need to build a stronger professional brand are exactly the people for whom “being themselves” has, in some contexts, not been enough. The authenticity conversation needs to be more sophisticated than this.
What Authenticity Actually Means in a Professional Context
Authenticity doesn’t mean sharing everything, behaving identically in every situation, or expressing every thought and emotion without filter. True professional authenticity means that your values, your way of thinking, and your genuine character are consistently present in how you show up — regardless of who’s in the room. It doesn’t mean you communicate identically with your team, your peers, and your board. It means that the core of who you are is recognisable across all those contexts.
The Trap: Authenticity as an Excuse
The authenticity trap works in both directions. In one direction, people use “I’m just being myself” to avoid the discomfort of development — treating their current habits and limitations as fixed personality traits rather than patterns that can be changed. In the other direction, people suppress genuine aspects of their character — their humour, their directness, their perspective — in an attempt to fit a perceived professional mould. They end up with a professional persona that is polished and forgettable in equal measure. The goal is neither of these. It’s to understand which aspects of your genuine character are actually assets in professional contexts — and to amplify those deliberately.
Finding Your Authentic Brand Pillars
Start by asking the people who know you best — professionally and personally — to describe you with three or four adjectives. Look for the words that appear in both lists. Those are your most deeply authentic characteristics: the ones that are present regardless of context. Now ask a harder question: are those characteristics showing up clearly and consistently in your professional life? Often, the gap between authentic self and professional brand is not that they’re different things — it’s that the professional version is a diluted, over-filtered version of what’s genuinely there.
The Cultural Dimension
For many leaders — particularly women, people of colour, and those from non-traditional professional backgrounds — authenticity in the workplace carries an additional complexity. The norms of many professional environments were built around a particular type of leader. Authentic doesn’t mean naive. Building a brand that is genuinely you while also operating effectively in systems that weren’t designed with you in mind requires self-awareness, strategy, and sometimes code-switching that is legitimate, not a betrayal of self. The measure is not whether you adapt your style. It’s whether your core values and character remain intact through that adaptation.
